Although you’ll be able to gather info on your tires when you come in for regular maintenance, it’s important that you also know how to properly inspect them. Doing so allows you to catch any signs of wear-and-tear or damage and prevent it from worsening. If you aren’t sure what to do, the AutoStream team is gladly available to help. Here’s what you should be doing once or twice a month:
Check The Tread
One of the easiest ways to check a tire’s tread is to utilize the penny test. Using a penny, simply insert it headfirst into various parts of the tread. If you see any part of the phrase “In God, We Trust” at the top of the penny, that indicates the tire’s tread is past the recommended minimum level of thickness. At this point, you’ll need to replace the tire before it goes fully bald. And as mentioned before, make sure you insert it into multiple areas of the tread to ensure you have an even wear throughout the tire.
Look for Damage
If the tread looks good, then start looking for any damage around the tire. Objects such as nails can easily find themselves in the tire and plug up the damage, but if struck at the wrong angle could cause something as serious as a blowout. If you see any damage on the tread of the tire, there’s a possibility it could be repaired. If any damage is found outside of the tire, then you’ll likely have to replace it as this type of damage only compromises its structural integrity.
