It is important to periodically listen to your brakes while in your vehicle. There are a few warning signs that can alert you to the need for service. This should be done without the air conditioner or music on. This is so you can listen for potential problems. If you come across any of the following indicators, you should have your brakes serviced soon if not immediately.

First and probably the easiest to miss is a high pitch squealing noise when braking. There is a small metal indicator within most brake pads. The indicator is exposed when they start running thin and are a signal that you need brake pad replacement soon, not immediately but soon. The second warning signal is if your car pulls to the right or left when braking. While this can mean a few different things, in regards to your brakes it could be a sign of uneven wear of your brake pads. This is generally the result of improper wheel alignment. Another warning signal is spongy or soft brakes. When you press your brakes, they should be firm and react quickly. If there is air in your brake line, it will cause spongy and unresponsive braking. Lastly, if you hear and feel grinding it means your brake pads have completely worn off and now you are experiencing metal on metal contact. This can greatly diminish your ability to brake properly. Furthermore, it is dangerous.
