Why Fresh Oil Is Important
Often referred to as the “lifeblood” of an engine, oil is essentially the most important component to an engine’s performance and efficiency. Fresh, clean oil is multifaceted. It lubricates the various engine components for seamless operation, maintains temperature by absorbing excess heat, and cleans the engine by carrying harmful particles (dirt, debris) to the oil filter where they get trapped can no longer circulate the unit. As oil ages, it depletes, and its viscous consistency slowly morphs into a sludge. This sludge not only inhibits proper lubrication, but it also stores heat, causing the radiator and cooling system to work harder. Similarly, if the oil filter is not changed regularly, it can become clogged. In turn, the amount of oil that passes through the filter is severely reduced, creating the potential for damage to occur. This is why oil changes are part of routine vehicle maintenance and tune-up services. How Often Do You Need Your Oil Changed?
When it comes to oil change intervals, multiple factors need to be considered: the car's age, its condition, its mileage, and the type of oil used. With newer vehicles, the general guideline is to get an oil change every 5,000 to 7,000 miles, or roughly every six months. The vehicle's owner's manual is the best place to check the timeframe for your vehicle. If your vehicle is older, it’s advised to get an oil change more frequently (every 3,000 miles or so). We can put you on a custom maintenance schedule that ensures your car gets the service it needs when it needs it. However, it’s important to heed to any abnormal engine performance. If you notice a ticking sound when the engine is running or increased noise from the engine, your oil may be compromised. Your oil warning light or check engine light can also appear. Keeping an eye on the oil itself is also helpful. If it appears low after checking the dip stick, or if it’s darker or dirtier upon visual inspection, find the time to come see us. We’ll take a look and see what’s going on.
