Are Your Tires Telling You They’re Tired?
We understand that tires are a major purchase, so you probably want to use the ones you have as long as possible. However, there are some signs that tell you when it’s time for a new set. Some of the warnings are more easily detected by a technician during your service visit. For example, when your tread measures less than 4/32″, you should replace them. While you can measure this yourself, most people find it easier to have their mechanic do it. Similarly, if the tread is worn down to the “wear bar” or the tires are past their tread wear warranty, the technician will remind you that it’s time to consider purchasing tires.
Other warning signs are more readily noticeable to drivers. If your car always shakes when you drive–even on a smooth road–you may need to consider new tires. Also, if the sidewalls look cracked, cords are showing, the tires are unevenly worn, or the tires are bald (lacking tread), they need replacing. Finally, if you are driving on a spare tire, you need to purchase a replacement. First, you need to make sure you have a spare at all times. Second, if your spare is the small “donut” type, it is meant for short distances only–enough to get you to the repair shop when you’ve had a flat.
If you worry about knowing how to get maximum safe use out of your tires, let our staff at AutoStream Car Care in Columbia, Maryland, assist you. If you’ve had a flat, we can repair it for you if it’s safe, or we’ll tell you if it isn’t. Also, we can help you keep your tires rotated and balanced on a regular schedule or perform a wheel alignment if needed to extend the life of your tires. When these measures are no longer enough and you need a new set of tires, we’ll be honest with you about that. You can be assured that our staff will give an honest assessment and recommendation to guide you in your choices regarding your tires.
