Maryland Vehicle Safety Inspection in Clarksburg, MD
Have you recently moved to Maryland? Maybe you just purchased, inherited, or been gifted a vehicle. If so, then you will need to have your vehicle inspected. An authorized Maryland vehicle safety inspection center is required to receive the certificate. Unlike many other states that require mandatory vehicle safety inspections every year, Maryland only requires an inspection in these three situations.
- Out of State Registration: New residents are required to have a vehicle safety inspection prior to being able to get their car registered. Residents have 60 days to complete this process.
- Purchase of a used vehicle: When you purchase a used vehicle prior to registration it is necessary to have your car inspected. The inspection certificate is only valid for 90 days. If you do not have an inspection certification dated 90 days prior to registration, another inspection will be required.
- Received from inheritance or as a gift:The same as above applies if you have inherited a vehicle or been gifted one. A certificate must be dated within 90 days to have the vehicle registered.
A Few Things To Consider Before Inspection
There are a few things that you may not be aware of when it come to your vehicle safety inspection. Window tint cannot exceed 35% and tint on the windshield is only allowed on the top 5 inches. A separate fee might be added when tint requires measurement. The only time this rule does not apply is for SUV’s, Trucks, and Limousines. In their case only, the front windshield and two front passenger windows need to meet the 35% requirement; back windows can be as dark as desired.
Failed a Maryland Safety Inspection?
If your used vehicle failed its first Maryland Vehicle Safety Inspection don’t be alarmed, very few pass on the first try. From there, you will have 30 days or 1,000 miles, whichever comes first, to get your car re-inspected. If you take longer than that you will have to start all over. A re-inspection fee will be waived if the repair can be verified visually. If the re-inspection requires your car to be jacked, lifted, measured, or retested then a fee may be applied. Once you pass, you may take your inspection certificate to your local MVA office to apply for registration.
