Airbags are lifesavers. They protect you from being even more injured during violent car accidents. There are occasions, however, when an airbag is deployed during softer impacts, potentially causing drivers more injury from the airbag itself than the collision. While this is rare, it is a possability. If your vehicle’s airbag deploys, make sure you follow these 4 steps.

4 Steps to Follow After Your Car’s Airbag Deploys

Car Airbag Deployed

1. Check for Injuries

If you are conscious and aware of your situation, you should check yourself for injuries after your airbag deploys. Make sure all of your passengers are fine as well. Medical attention is always the priority whenever an airbag deploys. There is no need to worry about anything else if there were people injured as a result of your car accident. Seek medical attention, but do not drive vehicle.

2. Turn Off Engine

Most airbag deployments will trigger a mechanism that automatically turns your car’s engine off. This is to protect passengers from any possible explosions from oil leaks. If for some reason your automobile is still running, however, then it is very important that you turn off your car and safely exit it as soon as possible. Always check your surrounding before exiting your vehicle, especially if you car accident occurred on a highway where other vehciles make still be driving around you.

3. Examine Your Vehicle

Once it has been determined that everyone involved in the car accident is OK, it’s time to assess the damage. Call the police to have them help you document the accident. Take pictures of the damage, and even make notes about it if you think it will help you remember the events. Then contact your insurance company and relay the information about the crash to them. They will be able to guide you through the next steps of getting your vehicle repaired.

4. Replace Car’s Airbags

Replacing an airbag can be very expensive. There is a good chance that when it deploys your insurance company and trusted mechanic will determine that the car is totaled. If the collision wasn’t too bad and your auto repair shop can replace the airbag, this is a viable option as well. It will all depend on the amount of damage that occurred during your accident or fender bender.

Getting into a car accident, no matter how big or how small, can be a hassle. It’s important to have a mechanic that you can trust to help you determine what to do with your vehicle after the airbag deploys. Ultimately the decision should be made with safety as the main priority!

We’ve been watching sci-fi movies for many decades now, and movie magic has given us a glimpse into what transportation could look like in the future. We’re still a long ways from teleportation or flying cars (although the flying cars have at least reached the prototype phase). There are several cool inventions that you can find in today’s cars that you may have not realized!

Top 3 “Future” Car Technologies that Are Already Here

Future Car Technologies

1. Self-driving Cars

In the movies, the self-driving car may have been called Herbie the Love Bug, K.I.T.T., or the Batmobile. Engineers and scientists are still in the process of bringing those to fruition. But for now, the self-driving car is technically a self-parking car. Parallel parking is something that causes many drivers anxiety, but self-parking/driving is a common feature among cars. With this self-parking capability becoming more common, it won’t be long before driving is completely hands off.

2. Cars That Communicate

Another technology that we’ve seen for years on television, and in real life, are cars that are able to communicate with us. With GPS systems and OnStar technology, that’s nothing new. However, cars that communicate with each other are a new development. To ensure road safety, the Department of Transportation is mandating this responsive technology. All vehicles will be manufactured with the ability to be in sync with each other. Notifications will alert drivers of all types of possible dangers from other cars, curves, curbs, and road conditions.

3. Augmented Reality Dashboards

This newest technology is straight out of a Mission: Impossible movie. Your dashboard and your windshield present real-time information for drivers. Imagine hologram-style messaging or images appearing right before your eyes while you drive. The amount of information and the types of information a driver can receive is limitless. With the wave of your hand or sound of your voice, this technology will respond. Mercedes-Benz is leading the way on all of the newest technologies.

It sounds funny, right? You probably have to think about when’s the last time you’ve actually seen a road map. For many of you, you’re wondering if you’ve ever really used a good ‘ol fashion road map. Nowadays we have a variety of GPS devices to help us get where we need to go! What possible reason would there be to purchase a paper map? We’re glad you asked.

3 Reasons to Keep a Map in Your Car

GPS vs Map

1.  Maps let you better plan your route.

When you’re headed out for an extended road trip, it’s a good idea to have an idea of the route you’ll be taking before you leave. Make not of significant landmarks, bodies of water, or cities that you’ll cross through, so you know what you’ll be passing through. It’s also important to know which stretches of road will have rest areas or restaurants so you can take a bathroom break and get food. Maps are great for planning ahead, and getting a good idea of what you can expect on your trip, GPS devices aren’t quite as easy to read in this way.

The GPS in your car or on your phone will only give you a small piece of the route at a time. This prevents you from having foreknowledge about cities, mountains, bodies of water, etc. that you would easily know about with a regular road map. How often are we totally taken by surprise by our GPS simply because we’re listening and driving, rather than paying attention to our surroundings? All of a sudden a wildlife preserve that you may or may not have wanted to avoid comes out of nowhere.

2.  Maps never lose service.

If you’re using a smartphone’s navigation app to guide you, you do run the risk of losing signal. You’re depending on being able to get cellular service wherever you are, which isn’t always the case! And of course the places you would lose a GPS satellite signal would be in more remote locations, where you probably don’t know where you’re going. If you were to plan on not having cellular service, you would make sure to have a road map on hand, so it’s best to be on the safe side and just keep one in your glove box.

3.  Maps can’t run out of battery power.

If there is one thing that we are certain of, it’s that electronic devices, such as GPS systems and cell phones, tend to fail at the worst possible times. Out of nowhere, a battery will die or a screen will freeze. And if you don’t have car charger for your phone or GPS, you’re really out of luck!

Now we’re not saying to do away with your GPS, and only rely on maps. But if you want to make sure that you reach your destination as safely and quickly as possible, it’s important to be prepared. And that preparation should include putting a trusty map in your glove box, just in case.

We’ve really enjoyed getting into the soccer matches with our friends and family and cheering the USA to a great victory over Ghana and an exhilarating (yet heartbreaking!) tie to Portugal. The USA will take on Germany this Thursday, June 12, and we’re ready to cheer for the red, white and blue again!

After getting caught up in the World Cup games – and with the 4th of July right around the corner – we thought we’d take this opportunity to share some of the most patriotic red, white and blue cars that we’ve spotted across the Internet. Bask in the glory of these American flag automobiles and appreciate what a great country we live in.

Well we’ve made it through the April showers and have been enjoying some lovely May flowers here in Baltimore, Columbia and Ellicott City, MD! But just because April is over, doesn’t mean the summertime rainstorms are too.

Summer showers are common, so it’s important that you are prepared to handle the slippery road conditions. Next time you find yourself caught in some bad weather, make sure you remember these 9 tips for safe driving in the rain.

Safe Driving in the Rain in Baltimore, Columbia and Ellicott City MD

9 Tips for Safe Driving in the Rain

1. Turn on your headlights. Not only is it safer to turn your headlights on when driving in the rain because it helps other drivers see you better, it’s also the law. Maryland Law says you must turn on your headlights when you are using your windshield wipers.

2. Increase the following distance between the car in front of you. It takes longer for your car to come to a complete stop when the roads are wet or slick. Make sure you leave extra room between your vehicle and the one in front of you so you can brake safely.

3. Drive closer to the middle of the road. When driving in the rain, try to stay more towards the middle of the road and away from the shoulder. Puddles tend to form along the edges of the road, and you never can be sure how deep these puddles are. These puddles could be major potholes that could greatly damage your automobile!

4. Be extra cautious if it hasn’t rained in a while. Did you know that the road is slipperiest when it first starts to rain? It’s true. The dried grease and motor oil that is on the road gets pulled to the surface when it starts raining, making the road conditions especially bad. This is even worse if it hasn’t rained in a while. After it’s been raining for a bit this grease gets carried away, and you actually have better traction than when it first started raining.

5. Never use cruise control when it’s raining. When you use cruise control, your car wants to keep you at a consistent speed. So if it’s raining outside and your car catches some water and starts hydroplaning, your car will actually speed up to maintain your speed! This can cause you to lose control of your car and end up in a car accident.

6. Don’t panic if you start hydroplaning. Your vehicle will hydroplane if a layer of water comes between your tires and the road. This causes you to lose traction and possible drift. When this happens, DO NOT PANIC OR SLAM ON THE BRAKE. If you do panic and slam on the brakes, you run the risk of spinning out and completely losing control of your car. Rather than braking, simply let off the gas and keep your steering wheel straight. That way when your tires make contact with the pavement again you’ll be able to safely drive straight out of it.

7. Periodically replace your windshield wiper blades. Windshield wiper blades that work properly without streaking or sticking are vital to safe driving in the rain. Unfortunately, most people don’t think about changing their wiper blades until they are caught in the rain with a streaky windshield. Sound familiar? Next time you think about changing your windshield wiper blades, do yourself a favor and get it done right then. It doesn’t take long, and it will save you a lot of hassle later.

8. Keep up with your car maintenance and tire services. Good tires are especially important when you’re driving in the rain. Make sure they are inflated to the proper tire pressure for your vehicle, and make sure they have optimal tread. If your tread or tire pressure is too low you will have less traction or grip on the road, both when it’s raining and when it’s not.

9. Don’t be afraid to pull your vehicle over. If the weather conditions ever make you too uncomfortable to drive in simply pull over in a safe location and wait out the storm. It’s not worth the risk to keep driving on if you can’t see or are nervous about safely reaching your destination. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

Chances are you have some experience driving in rainy conditions, but it’s always important to brush up on the basics just in case. Make sure you and your family members are aware of these 9 tips for safe driving in the rain so you can all be prepared the next time you get caught in an afternoon thunderstorm.

Well it is officially springtime now! Even though our temperatures here in Baltimore, Columbia and Ellicott City, MD are still hovering lower than we would want them to, and the snow just doesn’t seem to want to get out of the forecast, the changing seasons are upon us.

Spring is a time of rebirth, rejuvenation and rigorous cleaning rituals. Whether you have plan to deep clean your home or not, there is one thing that you need to make sure you don’t leave off your spring clean list: your car. Whether you drive a car, truck, SUV, minivan or hybrid automobile, winter was tough on your vehicle. It needs some TLC to get it ready to function properly in the summer! Many people do not realize that cleaning your car is actually a very important vehicle maintenance service, and failing to do so can have a negative affect on your vehicle’s performance.

Our expert mechanics have compiled this list of 6 tips for spring-cleaning your car to help you keep your vehicle running its best.

Spring Clean Car Wash Baltimore

6 Tips for Cleaning Your Car this Spring

1. Only use soaps that are designed to wash a car. Regular kitchen soaps or detergents can contain chemicals that may damage your vehicle or its paint job.

2. Never wash your car in direct sunlight. Direct sunlight can leave spots on your car as your car dries, and greatly wears down the paint.

3. Lighten your load. Remove heavy, excess cargo from your trunk or the interior of your vehicle that you may have collected over the winter months. Carrying unnecessary weight in your car slows it down on the road and reduces fuel efficiency significantly.

4. Vacuum the inside of your vehicle. Crumbs and food particles will attract ants and other critters now that it’s getting warm outside!

5. Don’t forget to clean under your car. It’s important that you hose down the undercarriage and wheels of your vehicle to remove salt buildup from the winter roads. There are many vital auto parts under your car that are exposed to the elements, and forgetting to clean them can lead to rust and other expensive damage.

6. Inspect your vehicle for rust. Take a look under your car or around any dings or dents for signs of rust. If you notice anything suspicious it’s best to let your trusted auto repair mechanic in Baltimore know right away to prevent further damage.

While you are spring-cleaning your car, make sure you keep an eye out for anything that looks out of the ordinary. Also make sure you pay special attention as you are driving to see if you notice any new noises or feel any changes in your cars ride. If you do notice anything, or you would just like to get your automobile checked out with the changing seasons, you can always bring your car to one of AutoStream Car Care Center’s three convenient auto repair shops in Baltimore, Ellicott City and Columbia, MD. Our expert mechanics are here to answer all of your car maintenance questions and are always happy to help!

Auto repairs are can be both costly and unavoidable. When the time comes that your vehicle needs service, you need to bring it to an auto repair shop in Baltimore, MD that’s reliable and trustworthy. After all, you spend a good amount of time in your car, you need to make sure whoever keeps it running keeps it running right!

Below are some tips to help you choose an auto repair shop that you can rely on. It makes getting your car repaired that much easier when you know exactly where to take it!

Choosing the right auto repair shop in Baltimore

7 Tips for Choosing the Right Auto Repair Shop

1.  Ask friends and family for their recommendations. After all, it’s often their opinions that you value most, and unless asked directly, most people won’t offer their advice on their favorite shop or mechanic, it’s just not the most interesting topic!

2.  Choose an auto repair shop before major repairs are needed. It’s a lot easier to choose a shop without the pressure of needing immediate repairs. It also gives you time to better weigh your options.

3.  Pick a shop that employs ASE Certified Technicians. ASE Certified Technicians are mechanics who have gone through rigorous training and testing to be experts in their automotive fields. You can trust they will take good care of your automobile.

4.  Make sure the auto shop your choose works on your make and model of vehicle. Some repair shops are specialized, so be sure that the shop you choose has mechanics that are certified to work on your type of vehicle.

5.  See if the shop has transportation options available. In the case that a major repair arises, can the shop give you a lift back home or to the office? Many auto repair shops will accommodate your transportation needs (within reason), so be sure to call and ask if a free local shuttle service or loaner cars are available.

6.  Make sure the shop will honor your vehicle’s warranty. Most independent auto repair shops will honor vehicle warranties, but it’s too important of a topic not to ask directly.

7.  Ensure the shop guarantees their services. Nowadays, you should never choose a shop that does not stand behind the car repair or maintenance services they provide. Ask about the warranty options the shop provides.

At AutoStream Car Care Center, we understand that vehicle repairs can be costly, and we’re here to help. Whether you call us at the time that your vehicle is in need of service, or to simply gather information on what our auto repair shop in Baltimore has to offer, we’re here and happy to help answer your questions!

With the prices of plane tickets increasing every year, more people are opting to drive for the holidays than ever before. When you’re heading to celebrate with family and friends, the last thing you want to have to deal with is a breakdown on the highway. At AutoStream Car Care Center, our ASE Certified Mechanics in Baltimore, Columbia and Ellicott City, MD want to remind you of some of the most important car maintenance services to have completed before traveling this holiday season!

Cute Christmas puppies in car - Holiday car maintenance travel tips

3 Important Vehicle Maintenance Tips for Safe Holiday Travel

1.  Oil Change – As the lifeblood of your vehicle, clean, efficient motor oil is essential for helping your engine run smoothly. Waiting longer than the recommended 3,000-5,000 miles between oil changes can result in engine build-up and sludge, which slows down your engine’s performance. If left untreated for too long major damage can occur that could result in expensive engine repair.

2.  Brake Repair – Your brakes are the most important safety feature on your vehicle. If you notice your brakes feeling a little “spongy,” or that you’re able to push the pedal to the floor, it’s time to get your brakes checked out by your trusted local auto repair shop. With the added traffic on the road during the holidays, it’s important to keep yourself, your passengers, and other drivers on the road as safe as possible!

3.  Tire Services – When the weather gets cold, you’re more likely to run into icy roads and adverse weather conditions that can make driving difficult and dangerous. It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there on the roads sometimes, and you may not always feel like driving. Our canine friends always seem up to the challenge though! It never fails that as soon as we get out of the car, our pups are eager to jump into the drivers seat. Let’s take a look at some of our favorite driving dogs and how they rule the road!

Bloodhound dog driving country truck

You’ve heard people say some dogs look like their owners, but have you heard that some dogs look like their cars? Hank’s cool with it.

Puppy dog driving a Ford car

I’m going to have to see your license and registration…you don’t even look 16 in dog years.

Dogs in car not asking for directions

“Why don’t you just stop and ask for directions?!”
“It’s OK, I think I know where we are.”

Happy dog riding in front seat of car
